How Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s passing could Change the Future of American Political Elections.

When the news of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s passing broke on September 18th, her family shared the wish she made very clear in the days leading up to her death: that her Supreme Court seat not be filled until after a new president is installed.

As outlined by an NPR article that can be found here, the passing of the feminist icon could mean the overturning of many landmark civil rights and social policy decisions that were advocated by Ginsburg.

This is because Republican President Donald Trump technically has the right to nominate a new Justice to the court before the upcoming election, and if given a vote, Republicans could manage to turn the Supreme Court conservative when electing a new Judge.

While some have brought up the fact that Republicans moving forward with and holding hearings for a new Supreme Court Justice within an election year, not to mention with less than two months before an election, would be hypocritical, as outlined in this ABC article referring back to 2016.

In early 2016, nine months away from the election itself, conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia passed away, and Senate Republicans barred then-President Barack Obama from appointing a new Judge, citing that it would not be fair to the American people for a new Justice to be appointed during an election year as predicted by Politico here.

Now, in 2020, a similar situation has arisen, except this time, Ginsburg passed away less than two months before the election, and Republicans are pushing for Trump to elect a Judge for a vote.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican even said on the record in 2016 “I want you to use my words against me. If there’s a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, let’s let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination.” The video can be found here.

Since Ginsburg’s passing, Donald Trump has nominated Amy Coney Barrett to fill her seat.

Vice News’ Youtube channel made a video explaining the possible outcomes in the wake of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s passing that touches on what nominating Barrett to the Supreme Court could possibly mean for elections nationwide both at the national and state level.

While it is unknown whether Barrett will even receive a hearing, in the event that she is elected to the Supreme Court, the reaction from Democrats, especially if presidential candidate Joe Biden wins, is unclear.

While it was looking like Senate Republicans were gearing to have a hearing for Barrett, Trump was diagnosed with Covid-19, the coronavirus that has killed more than 200,000 Americans in the past 7 months, and has killed over 1 million worldwide during the current global pandemic.

With the election now only twenty-five days away, the health of the President in question, and no news on what could become of the open Supreme Court seat all while in the middle of a deadly pandemic, uncertainty in American government could prove to have global repercussions, as this election could change American politics forever.
