Elections and the Electoral College

I did a short live stream on my Instagram covering the history of the Electoral College, and the possible future of it as it pertains to American politics that can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/y4gbmgwj

The live stream from early Election Night discusses why the Electoral College was originally created, and how it disproportionally gives more power to states with smaller populations during an election cycle. I get into how the Electoral College has disenfranchised voters of color historically, and how the impacts of that can still be seen in the current election. The future of the Electoral College is relatively fixed, but in recent years, more and more candidates, mostly Democrats, are running on a platform of abolishing the Electoral College, and switching over to a system based on the popular vote. I mainly discuss how the Electoral College has overturned the will of the American people in two of the past five Presidential elections, all while making routine checks to the live vote counts from Election night!

If you’re surprised that Georgia might flip to Democrat when the south is generally considered a Republican stronghold, remember that, for a few decades, there has been a long string of counties that have voted Democratic. Counties with higher population, such as these, tend to be more diverse, and tend to vote Democratic, which potentially makes these states competitive in presidential elections.
